Final Fantasy VI is a role-playing video game created by
Squaresoft (now known as Square Enix). The sixth installment in the
Final
Fantasy series, it was also the third and last
Final Fantasy game for the Super Nintendo
(Super Famicon).
In the early 1990s, the game was released in North America under the name
Final Fantasy III.
Later, it was later ported to the Playstation console; the North American version was given its
proper name,
Final Fantasy VI, and was released with
Final Fantasy V under the
compilation title
Final Fantasy Anthology. Although not a remake of
FFVI, the
Playstation port added features, bonuses, and FMVs. It also was difficult to play due to slow
loading times. In December 2006, the game was re-released as
Final Fantasy VI Advance
for the Gameboy Advance; it included several new Espers and dungeons, along with some added
bonuses from the Playstation version (though not the FMVs). The North American version,
released in February 2007, also included a new translation.
The game takes place in a world where technology has been advancing for some time, although
the main focuses are developments in iron, steam, and gunpowder. The game has a European,
medieval quality to it, even though airships, armored suits (Magitek armor), and other new
inventions.
One thousand years ago, the War of the Magi nearly devastated the entire world. Magic ceased
to exist in the world from that point on. However, in the present, the powerful Empire has
become intent on reviving magic for world domination. Their main weapon is a girl with no
memory of her past, forced to become a mindless slave for the Empire. For some reason, she
naturally possesses the strange gift of magic. Events are set into motion when the girl
encounters a frozen creature, an Esper, and unknowningly communes with it.
Final Fantasy VI introduces you to many characters and frequently gives you the ability
to choose your own parties. Although there are many important characters, there is no main
one, something which is very unusual for the
FF games. One of the major characters in
the game is Celes Chere, general for the Empire, and the main focus of this shrine.
FFVI happens to be my favorite game in the
Final Fantasy series, mostly because
I love all the characters, each of whom is unique and interesting in his or her own way, and
the story. The graphics are quite nice for the Super Nintendo, sprites rock, and the
soundtrack is one of the most amazing ever from the
FF series. Although classified as
"old school," I still love playing it.
